All art, no deal: On the U.S.-Saudi Arabia nuclear deal
The US-Saudi civil nuclear deal, announced amidst US-Iran nuclear tensions, is poorly timed and complicated by shifting conditions. Saudi Arabia seeks nuclear power for economic diversification (Vision 2030) and energy needs. However, the agreement's potential for Saudi enrichment and omission of IAEA Additional Protocol raise proliferation concerns, contradicting US policy on Iran. Trump's post-signing condition for Saudi Arabia to join the Abraham Accords adds further complexity. This ill-executed diplomacy risks alienating Riyadh and strengthening Tehran's nuclear resolve, ultimately undermining US objectives.
