US, Iran and the missing endgame
Iran, facing declining leverage from the Strait of Hormuz and crippling US sanctions, is now more eager for talks to end hostilities. Previously, the Strait was Iran’s potent economic weapon. However, crude exports from West Asia have rebounded, and Saudi Arabia has repaired its bypass pipeline, reducing Iran's chokehold. The US, led by President Trump, is rejecting Iranian proposals, preferring to wait for sanctions to inflict further economic pain on Tehran before negotiating. Despite high inflation and shortages impacting ordinary Iranians, the leadership remains resilient. To break the deadlock, both the US and Iran must relinquish some leverage, otherwise, a prolonged stalemate risks continuing.
