Punjab’s drug scourge needs policy, not slogans
Punjab faces an enduring drug menace, repeatedly becoming a political talking point during elections without sustained resolution. Despite various party campaigns and government crackdowns, including the current AAP initiative, the problem persists, devastating families and forcing youth abroad. While geography plays a role, the trade now involves drones, other states, and pharmaceutical drugs. The author argues that mere arrests and seizures are insufficient. A serious response requires dismantling networks, prosecuting financiers, and ensuring accessible treatment and rehabilitation. The real test is for Punjab's political class to transform recurring election promises into concrete, sustained policy to genuinely combat this crisis.
