Falling behind: On Mumbai and the monsoon
Western India faces severe monsoon flooding, especially Mumbai, due to intense rainfall overwhelming inadequate drainage. Mumbai's vulnerable reclaimed land and high tides exacerbate issues. Haphazard urbanization increases runoff, while incomplete BRIMSTOWAD projects and climate change undermine infrastructure assumptions. This leads to transport disruptions, landslides, and casualties, revealing significant governance lapses and split accountability. Although Mumbai has improved life-saving shutdowns, infrastructure upgrades critically lag behind accelerating climate change and urbanization. Relying on current system capacity will fail, urging a strategic overhaul.
