Kerala's silver linings playbook for India
India faces an aging population, with seniors projected to double by 2050. Kerala leads nationally by establishing a dedicated elderly welfare department, a landmark intervention. This paradigm shift views seniors as contributors to a "silver economy," not a burden. The policy focuses on empowering independent living through parks, fitness centers, and day-care, while leveraging seniors' knowledge for economic growth and social participation. A survey will guide future programs. Given the grim realities of elderly health, dependency, and lack of pensions, the author strongly urges other Indian states to replicate Kerala's model, dismissing fiscal constraints as an excuse.
