Supreme Court rulings, notably Madras Bar Association (2025), mandated an independent National Tribunals Commission (NTC). The Tribunal Reforms Bill 2026, despite some positive provisions, critically fails to ensure NTC autonomy. It delegates qualifications and service conditions to executive rules and retains ministerial influence over complaint screening and NTC appointments. The author argues this perpetuates executive control, undermining the NTC's intended purpose. Full independence from government appointment and removal powers is essential for judicial integrity.
